Ellen Brooks - possibly

I believe that the woman is Ellen Brooks, a sister of my paternal grandmother

Ellen was the daughter of Mary Queer Brooks Skiles. Her husband's name would be Harmon Skiles. Ellen was born in Maryland in 1869. Mary was born in Somerset County, PA in 1831. Harmon was born in about 1817. The photo looks like it was taken about 1890.

Harmon and Mary moved from Pittsburg PA about 1880 to Hamilton County NE. Then they moved from NE to Rice County, KS about 1885 where both a buried. In the 1880 census Ellen Brooks was 11 years old. Her father was Samuel Brooks b about 1804 and died in about 1869 probably in MD.

This photo was in a "Mother's Box" of cards and letters kept by my Grandmother Elizabeth Brooks Mendenhall Whetstone Mendenhall who died in 1940 in Central City, NE.

Henry Rhodeman/Rhodman

Possibly this is Henry Rhodeman/Rhodman. Henry was born abt. 1810, in MD. He married Sidney Keller, who was born abt. 1812-1816. They lived in Pendleton County, VA.

Written on the back of the photo: Grandad Rhodeman, 97 years old when he died, born 1810, died 1907 at Evanw (the rest is torn off) West Virginia. The photo was originally attached to a backboard. The writing on the back would have continued, but whatever was there originally came off with the backboard. Evanw (which is one of the words cut off) could have been Evanwood.

Do you know more about the Rhodemans? Please let me know.

Velma Ralston Skelley was born June 11, 1914 in Evanwood, Tucker County, WV. Velma died Feb 8, 1983 in Cumberland, Allegany County, MD. She was the daughter of Elby Samuel Ralston and Carrie Elisabeth Jones. Her siblings were Helen, Paul, Jean, and Joanna Genevieve.

Velma married Gilmore Sweitzer, and then Joseph Skelley, Sr. Velma married Gilmore at the age of 13, then Joseph at the age of 19.

She operated the sales and bookkeeping for Skelley's Appliance and Parts Company of Cumberland, MD. She was renowned for her culinary skills, especially her bread baking. Velma held her first job at the age of 9 years old. She had a route, in which she would go to different houses and make the bread. She would get it to the 2nd stage of rising, and then go on to the next house. Often she would get paid in trade, and she helped many a housewife.

While going through the family bible of James Asbury Peeples, my grandfather I found this photo. It appears to be a class picture (one room schoolhouse?) that I would date to about 1915, and would be located in Maryland, perhaps in a location that was then called Thistle, in Baltimore County. It is affixed to the back of a postcard.
