Walter Johnstone

Walter Johnstone

My paternal great great grandfather, Walter Johnstone, born in 1860, in the town of Hawick, Scotland. He emigrated to the USA sometime in the early 1900's. I have a third generation account of his movements, how much of it is true I do not know.

He is alleged to have travelled to Victoria, Vancouver Island and from there to California where he is again alleged to have developed a small fruit farm. The Ellis Island records show that Euphemia Johnstone and two children from Hawick landed on 7th June 1907, from SS Astoria. Their fares paid by a Walter Johnstone. I do not know if this is my family as Ellis Island is a long way from California.

The photo unfortunately is not very sharp, was certainly taken in the USA but I do not think that the bush behind the figure is a fruit tree. The photo was taken in his garden and he used to send photos back home with US dollars pinned to the tree and call it his money tree. A good sense of humour would you say.
