Carroll Joy

Carroll Joy was born in Keokuk, Feb 15, 1899, and spent all of his life there, until he went to Annapolis in 1917. He traveled in Europe for one year with his sister, and Miss Bertha Craig as his tutor. His high school career was a splendid one. He was popular with both students and faculty because of his ready smile and courteous ways.

Carroll received an appointment to Annapolis in the spring of 1917, and left his graduating class before Commencement to fill it. Besides the regular training at the naval academy he was on two cruises. During the war he saw service with the Atlantic fleet, and in the summer of 1919 he was in Panama.

Carroll died Jan 1, 1920, from the effects of a bullet wound accidentally inflicted by a classmate, while target practicing in the woods near Annapolis, Dec 31, 1919.
