Robert Graham Snodgrass, born in 1854, Donley, Donegal Twp, Washington Co., was the son of Samuel and Matilda Lamborn Snodgrass of Donley. In 1880, Robert married Adeline Whiteman.
Samuel Snodgrass who died in 1902, was first and only Post Master of Donley, from 1871 to 1901 when postal area was taken over by the Claysville Post Office.
Information supplied by Postal History Corporate Information Services, Washington D. C. "I am enclosing excerpts from National Archives Microfilm Publication M841, Record of Appointment of Postmasters, 1832 - September 30, 1871, showing the appointment of Samuel Snodgrass as the first and only postmaster of the Donley Post Office on April 20, 1870. He served until the Post Office was discontinued on January 21, 1901."
My mother, Josephine A. Snodgrass Patterson said "Samuel also ran a general store where they lived which (including the P.O.) was the only thing in Donley, other than surrounding farms. I went to visit when a small child. One day as we were eating dinner there, we heard men ride up on horseback. Dad and Grandpa jumped up, put a large timber across the door just as the men started pounding on the door calling 'All right Snodgrass, we know you are in there' Grandpa said they were going to rob, and to be very quiet and they would go away, and pretty soon they did."
