Phoebe Ann Hilliard Hopkins Zufall Shaffer

Phoebe Ann Hilliard Hopkins Zufall Shaffer

Phoebe Ann Hilliard was born 23 Mar 1855 in Worthville, PA., and died 9 Nov 1920. She reportedly is buried in the Knoxdale, Jefferson Co., PA, Cemetery.

Her third marriage was on 15 Mar 1915, to Lewis C. Shaffer. He was born 27 Apr 1840, in Dry Ridge, PA., died 22 Feb 1925, near Mayport, PA, in the home of his son, Oliver J. Shaffer. He had married first on 10 Jul 1862, to Caroline Miller born 6 Aug 1842, in Dry Ridge, Armstrong Co., PA, died 29 Jun 1913, in Dry Ridge, PA. Upon Caroline's death, Lewis C. Shaffer then met, and married Phoebe and they moved to Timblin, PA.

Phoebe was the daughter of Simon Hilliard, of Knoxdale, PA. She first married Robert Hopkins, born 16 Aug 1846, and killed in a saw mill boiler explosion on 18 Jan1892. His mother-in-law, Mrs. Simon Hilliard, had a terrible dream before the event happened about the explosion and had warned her son-in-law, and had pleaded with him not to go back to the mill for fear something terrible would happen. Mr. Hopkins just laughed and assured her that everything would be fine! (See: The Punxsutawney Spirit, Back pages A Prophetic Dream! pp. A-1, 4 Apr 1998.)

Phoebe then remarried to a Mr. Zufall. Later, she married Lewis C. Shaffer.

On the reverse of the photograph is written in pencil barely readable, "Mrs. Zufall, Timblin, PA"
