Finley and James Spangler were the sons of Virginia Keatly and Everett W. Spangler. They were born in West Virginia at the turn of the century, and later lived in Summers County West Virginia, in the village of Junta. Their mother deserted the family and Everett married young widow, Callie Wiekle Ellis. Finley left home and lived in Pennsylvania and Ohio. He was married to Winnifred, last name unknown. They had no children. James continued to live with his parents and help run the family farms, both in Junta and in Bumpass Virginia. He never married.
