Samuel S. Hess

Samuel S. Hess was born on April 30, 1852 near Philadelphia, Pa. Little is known about him until he appeared in Minnesota in 1880 as one of the first settlers in Wing River Township, Wadena, Minnesota. He was instrumental in making the township a lumber producing unit.

Samuel married Melissa Ellen Adams on December 2, 1876 in Minnesota. They had 9 children. William Sandford Hess born March 10, 1874, Cora Hess born 1877, Daniel Hess born 1878, Maude Alice Hess born September 28,1879, Jesse Noah born May 27, 1885, Earl Richard Hess born June 27, 1887, James Grant Hess born April 10, 1889, Francis Ray Hess born November 10, 1892 and the submitter's grandmother Leah Hazel Hess born April 24, 1896.

Samuel died on March 10, 1932. Melissa Ellen died on January 23, 1915 after a battle with cancer.
