See "Camera Clues" by Joe Nickell for basics on dating photos according to physical characteristics. This seems to be a carte-de-visite, which only came into usage about 1855. This style of picture, with a bust filling the whole area, is from the 1870s. The style of his coat also seems to be from the 1870s: see "American Victorian Costume in Early Photographs" by Priscilla Harris Dalrymple. The length of his hair is also a feature of a later date. If he was born in 1830, he would be in his '40s at this time. I think I can see a little bit of bags under his eyes and creases at the corners, so that seems about right.
