I'm just making sure you know that Howenstine is an Anglicized version of Hauenstein, which would be the German spelling. My husband's family in Perry County, PA, can be traced to Magdalena Hauenstein, daughter of Henrich Hauenstein who came from Europe in 1750. His name is in the list of men who came from Rotterdam on the ship Royal Union, which arrived in Philadelphia on August 15. Henrich(Henry married Anna Maria Grehbuehl on Feb 15, 1769.
Rotterdam is in the Netherlands at the mouth of the Rhine, and would be the primary place where Germans would have left the continent. Don't know if our Hauensteins are related to your Howenstines, or not.
