Unknown family (possibly McCoy, Hollinger or Ryan), taken in East Grand Forks, MN

The style of the clothing is 1878-1883. See "Victorian Costume for Ladies" by Linda Setnik. The yellowish tint of this photo also dates it to before the 1890s. See "Camera Clues" by Joe Nickell, which has a chapter on dating photos by physical characteristics.

Dating your photo

It would be helpful to have the marks on the back of your photo. The photographer's name may help greatly in narrowing your time frame.

Also, tell us the size of the original print. That will help narrow down the time frame too, depending on the type of photo it is. If it is 4x6 inches it's a Cabinet Card (1870's and up) and then we'd look at the fashions and hair styles to get a better idea of a more exact date

Ii would be easier to date with more description of type of paper, type of backing, are the corners rounded or square, is there anything printed on the front below the actual photo, etc

Right now, based on the photo only and no description I'd go with 1890-1910 time period. I might change that guess based on any description you can add

Try for some help in dating your photo

W. F.Sunderland photo

I finally dated this photo as around 1883 and my gr.grandparents Sarah Ellen Shane and Wm. Alexander McCoy with John Ernest b. 1878, my grandmother Ellen Loretta b. 1879 and Julia Ann b. 1881 (registered as Anna Matilda). Found some very old photos of Sarah Ellen and Wm. Alex. which helped. Catherine
