John Robert Allison was born on Oct 14, 1901, in Grove City, PA. He was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church, in Grove City.
He married Dorothy Irene Gilbert on April 11, 1936, in New York, New York. The ceremony was performed by Dr. D. J. Fleming at the Christodora House. Dorothy was born on November 25, 1899, in Niles, Ohio. She was a daughter of Edgar Allan and Myrtle Ellen Harrison Gilbert. In 1920, Dorothy graduated from the Emma Willard School, in Troy, New York. She then studied at Dana's Musical Institute, in Warren, Ohio and earned music degrees in 1922 and 1930. In 1933, she graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Dorothy taught music at several private schools.
John graduated from Grove City College, in 1923. He studied at the University of Madrid (in Spain) for a year. He later earned a Master's Degree in Mathematics from Columbia University in 1928. John taught mathematics and Spanish at various public schools in the Northeastern United States. In 1942, he began working for the United States government as a psychologist (developing promotion tests for military personnel) in civilian personnel for the Department of the Army (later a part of the Department of the Air Force).
John and Dorothy lived in Mobile, Alabama. John served as a temporary member of the United States Coast Guard Reserve from Nov 1944 to September 1945. He retired from the Department of the Air Force in 1963. In 1963, John and Dorothy moved to Fort Myers, Florida. John taught mathematics at Edison Community College, in Fort Myers. John and Dorothy traveled to many countries around the world. In 1981, they moved to Orlando, Florida. Dorothy I. Gilbert Allison died on Nov 24, 1982, in Orlando, Florida. She was buried at All Faiths Memorial Park, in Casselberry, Florida. John R. Allison died on Feb 15, 1988, in Orlando, Florida. He was buried at All Faiths Memorial Park.
