Levi Broom was the father of Mary Margaret Broom Reynolds, who was my great-great grandmother. Her son Allen Jackson Reynolds was my great-grandfather. According to Allen's son Bonnell Jackson Reynolds (my grandfather), Grandpa Levi was known for his Civil War boast that "The cannonball ain't been made that can kill Levi Broom." Sure enough, he survived the war and raised a family. He lived to be 90, but suffered some form of dementia (Alzheimer's?) in his later years and often roamed the woods, talking to the trees.
