For his part in the rescue of two flyers forced down at sea during the battle of Midway, Naval Aviation Cadet Donald Elliott Thompson of Taylorville was yesterday awarded a citation by the Navy Department. Before being selected to attend the navy preflight school at Athens, Georgia, where he has been assigned for the last month, Cadet Thompson, who joined the Navy at 18 years of age, rose to first class petty officer. Cadet Thompson was commended by the citation for "alertness and devotion to dty", which contributed to the rescue of two men under "hazardous conditions" Thompson, who will be 23 in February, enlisted in the Navy during his senior year at the Taylorville Township High School on December 26, 1938. His parents are both dead and his step father is utility man for the Central Illinois Public Service Co. at Taylorville. He has made Taylorville his home the greater part of his life.
