This is the home of Austin and Hester English… Hutchinson, KS circa 1901, about the time that Austin bought a prominent corner lot on South Main to use as the site of his new carriage shop. Later Frank Thompson joined the firm and Thompson & English became possibly the largest carriage building enterprise in Kansas at the time. Around 1915 the carriage shop was driven out of business by the automobile trade and Austin started a new career as a millwright/mechanic for the Carey Salt Co.
In the yard with their dog is Harriett, Merritt, and Minot English; three of Austin and Hester’s four children.
