Edwin J. Sweet served with the 40th New York Infantry during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the army as a private on 21 Jun 1861 at the age of 22 and served in Co. G. 40th Infantry Regiment, New York. On 1 Jan 1863, he transferred from Co. G to Co. E.

He was promoted to Full Sergeant on 1 Mar 1863, and was promoted again to Full Sergeant 1st Class in Apr 1863.

Sgt. Sweet transferred from Co. E to Co. D on 25 May 1863, and from Co. D to Co. A on 5 Jun 1863.

He was promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on 5 Jun 1863, effective 5 Sept 1863; detailed on 2 Jul 1863. He transferred from Co. A to Co. E on 16 Dec 1863 when he was promoted to Full Lieutenant 1st Class. On 5 Feb 1864, he transferred from Co. E to Co. K.

Lt. Sweet mustered out on 18 Jul 1864 in New York, NY.
