Israel Hepburn and sons

From left to right, Israel Hepburn and his sons, Dixon Myers Hepburn and Theodore Harvey Hepburn.

Since Israel was born in 1806 and Dixon Hepburn in 1845, it is estimated that the photo was taken around 1875-1880 (Israel died in 1886).

Possibly the photo was taken at the old Hepburn farm on Wegee Creek south of Shadyside, in Belmont County, Ohio.

The photo was sent to me with the above-mentioned identification. In trying to better estimate the date on the photo, I sent it to an expert in antique engines. His response: "the engine (in the photo) is a GAS engine and not a steam engine. With that said, any practical gas engine was not really seen in rural America until about 1895. That engine in the picture is a 1900-1905 vintage. I can tell by the governor weights on the flywheel. Also, note the drain pipe from the roof to the cooling tank. This tells me that they never moved that engine and the rain water would keep it filled up." He also pointed out the telegraph pole in back which probably means a railroad was running back there also.
