Henry Fuchs' Saloon, Toledo, Ohio
Henry Fuchs’ Saloon on Monroe Street in Toledo, Ohio. The saloon was opposite (north side) the Milburn House Hotel (torn down in the early 1990s) at Monroe and Auburndale.
Photo probably taken between 1890 to 1891 shortly after the saloon was opened. Henry Fuchs (seated) is probably holding his daughter, Herma. Herma was born in 1890 and died in 1892 of diphtheria. Another daughter, Bertha, was born on 21 February 1889 in Archbold, Ohio, and would have been a toddler when this photograph was taken.
The Milburn Wagon Works is in the background across the railroad tracks, and was undoubtedly the source of many of the saloon’s customers. Henry’s wife, Catherine (Katie) Krauss Fuchs sits in an upper story window.
The other gentlemen are unidentified.
The original photograph was treasured and preserved by Katie Krauss Fuchs and is now in the family history collection of Bill Christen, a great-grandson of Henry Fuchs.
