Benjamin Cartwright, as well as, his brother Wesley Elijah Cartwright were sons of Rev. Elijah Cartwright of Youngstown, Mahoning Co. Ohio, and Elijah's first wife, Ann. Elijah's second wife was Margarette Thullen.

Benjamin was born Nov. 1847 in Washington Co., Maine, and died 5 June 1933 in Boardman, Mahoning Co., Ohio . He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Youngstown.

He married July 1870 in Youngstown, Ohio to Margaret Caufield, daughter of Alex and Elizabeth Caufield of Youngstown.

Benjamin was a former boss puddler at the old Brown-Bonnell Mill. in Youngstown. After leaving the mill he established himself in the grocery business.

His daughters were: Gertrude, wife of Decker Robert Fithian; Nell, wife of David Price and Grace, wife of W.J. Engelhardt.
