Thomas Harlan Purviance, son of Sarah Maxson and Dr. Thomas Harlan Purviance of Steubenville, was born February 13, 1844, in Tuscaroras County, in Ohio and died December 27, 1925 in the National Military Home in Jefferson township, Montgomery county, in Ohio. He is buried in Steubenville, Ohio. His first wife was Clarinda Barr, daughter of John Barr and Pricilla Maxon. Pricilla was the sister of Thomas's mother, thus making it a marriage between two first cousins. The marriage occurred in 1870. Children of Thomas and Clarinda Barr Purviance are Laura Purviance and Ida. M. Purviance.

He volunteered for enlistment in the Civil War March 3, 1865.He served with Co. H. 195 Ohio Infantry. He married Alice A. Lowmiller December 3 1885.
