Kenneth Hannan Keenan on Sax

Kenneth Hannan Keenan on Sax

Kenneth Hannan Keenan, taken in his forties and, as usual, on the sax! He had his first piano lesson at age two in Steubenville, Ohio. His mother, was very devoted to him, especially considering the fact that he was kicked in the stomach at age nine and injured his pancreas, thus setting him up for a lifetime of coping with diabetes.

As a boy, by the time he joined the band at Holy Name School in Steubenville, he was well on his way to being able to play every instrument in that band and to perfection. He also played in Dom Gregorys Royal Steubens as a boy and toured all over with many bands. In his youth he was asked to join the Glenn Miller Band but could not, do to the diabetes, which often put him in what was called insulin reactions and once a coma.

The family, his mother Mabel, his father Charles Keys (his birth father Thomas Keenan never saw, nor supported him), moved to Toledo to obtain work with the railroad. Kenneth went to work at Save Electric. Eventually he would marry Margaret Keenan, and have one daughter. His entire life was devoted to music, and at one time he taught it in the school system in Toledo, and he had many bands under his own name. He died at age 46 of a heart attack while preparing for another band date and is buried in Toledo Memorial Cemetery.
