Florence Ivory in Her Dentist Office

Florence Ivory in Her Dentist Office

Florence Ivory, left, in her Dentist Office with her assistant, right. Florence was way ahead of her time and was actually classified as a dental surgeon.

Photo taken in 1917 and at her office, located somewhere on 5th St., Pittsburgh, PA.

Nice

What a neat picture!

Ivory dentist office

I just found your comment regarding the picture of my Aunt Florence in her Dental Office. Thank you for the comment and sorry to be so slow to respond.
It is a neat picture and can you imagine going to the dentist in that office?? Technology has certainly come a long way since them.
I met her when she came to visit us when I was young and she was quite the character.
Do you have any Ivory relatives?
Best always, Gayle

Ivory dentists

A wonderful photo; I am wondering if Dr. Ivory was related to the IVORY men who were dentists in Philadelphia, Pa.; one of them established the J. W. Ivory Co. making dental instruments. At least two sisters from the same family also worked there (including Harriet Ivory 1860-1943 and Melissa Harnden, nee Ivory 1854-1944).

This IVORY family was from Ontario, Canada, and links to my own genealogy. Any info about them would be appreciated. Thanks.

Alan Richards

Ivory surname

Dear Alan,
I am reasonably sure that there is not a connection to your Ivory line. I have researched my family line since I was 18 and still cannot fill in some holes. My Capt. Andrew Ivory had 4 sisters (or at least the family info handed down includes that information) and I have found only one. You can go to Rootsweb and type in Gayle in World Connect where it says jump to a specific data base and go thru what I have there. So saying all this it is possible that perhaps a sister to Capt. Andrew did reside in Philly but I haven't seen if/or any of mine were in Ontario. If you see a connection you could solve a lot of problems I have.
Can you imagine going to the dentist in that office? I love that picture of my Aunt Florence and actually met her when she came to visit when I was a child. Amazing.
Best thoughts, Gayle

contact

I am working at the Museum of Science and technology in Belgrade, Serbia. We seen to have in our collection a similar type of dentist chair, so we will appreciate if Ms Gayle Ivory Strom would contact us for some consultation.

What would you like to know about the dentist chair?? It was my aunt's office and she is the dentist. I would be glad to answer questions if I can. Gayle

We would like to exhibit our chair and we would appreciate your permission to use this photograph as an illustration of the period. Of course we would name the source.

Dental chair picture

I would be pleased to let you use a copy of the picture. Would you identify my aunt and of course use me as the source just in case someone might have information about her and our family?
Her name was: Florence Irene Ivory
Her practice was in Pittsburgh PA
She is the lady on the left and I don't have the name of her dental technician.
I would also like a picture of the exhibit for my famly history.
Let me know if you need more information.
Thank you. Gayle

Dear Ms Gayle,
Apparently, there is another thing: Is it, perhaphs, possible for you to scan this photo in higher resolution in Tiff format and e-mail it to us? It would be nice if we could make a real poster out of it. Thank you again and best regards.

I am sorry but my original is in a frame now and I don't want to remove it from the frame. I will try to send a copy of the copy to see if it is better but I think not.
Let me know where to send it. Thank you, Gayle

Florence Ivory in her Dental Office

Hello Gayle,

I am the Curator/Director of the Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Our Health Sciences Librarian, Mark MacEachern, discovered your genealogy entry with the photo of Dr. Florence Ivory and her dental assistant. I checked our dental school list of graduates just in case and did not find her. I am assuming she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Dentistry program. Like us, they likely have a graduation picture of her if you are interested. You can also trace the history of her practice locations through the Polk Dental Registers, a national directory of licensed dentists. Some of the on-line genealogy databases have copies of those directories as part of the their collections too.

I am writing to you because I would also like to receive a copy of this image. We have a nice large format scanner and if you feel comfortable we could borrow the original and return it. Or, if you scanned it already for the other museum, we could just receive a copy via CD in the mail. TIF format is too large for email. We hope to create an exhibit about women in dentistry in the US. There are so few images of female dentists however, so it may take us some time to pull it together. Of course we would provide credit. I can also pay for any shipping costs as necessary.

Please feel free to contact me via email directly to make arrangements: dentalmuseum@umich.edu.

Thank you so much,
Shannon O'Dell

Florence Ivory - dentist

Hello.......am just leaving for the day but would enjoy replying in detail when I have a block of time. I do have a graduation picture of her and of course her office photo that you found. I also went to Pittsburgh and have a bit of info about her class. Will have to find it in my papers and get back to you. Best always, Gayle

use of your picture

Hello,

This classic picture would be lovely to use in our 2 minute trailer. (For the first 2,5 seconds only, just to start ...) We are looking for a royalty-free picture of an old fashion dental praxis. Is there any possibility we could use this picture with your permission? It would really help us out!
Thank you for your early reply > mailto: pamela@dhm-dental.com

p.s. if you want we will list the source/names in the credits
