Frank Wood was the second of nine children born to Marsh and Minnie Davison Wood. He was born on the family homestead in Canal Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania.

Frank attended Lupher School (grades 1-8), Utica High School (grades 9-11) and Cooperstown High School (grade 12). He then went to Slippery Rock Normal in Slippery Rock. Pennsylvania. After finishing there he taught school for two years before moving on to other employment. In 1906 he was a painter.
