James Hassan

James Hassan

James Hassan was born in Scotland about 1846. He married Mary Lippert in Clearfield, Clearfield County, PA on 15 Sept 1871.

Mary Lippert was born abt 1845 in PA, the daughter of Jacob Lippert and Mary Dellar. Jacob and Mary were both born and married in Germany. They came to Lancaster Co., in 1842, by 1850 they were in Elk Co., and by 1860 they were in Clearfield Co., PA. Mary Lippert had the following siblings: George, Catherine, John, Nicholas and Catherine Lippert.

Also, in 1871, James received his naturalization papers in Clearfield Co., PA.

James died in 1878 in a Coal Mine Accident, location unknown.

After James died in 1878, Mary Lippert Hassan and the children came back to Clearfield Co., PA where she had her last child Charles Augustine Hassan on 21 Sept 1878.

She died shortly there after and all five of the Hassan boys - James, William, Frank, John and Charles - were put in the St. Joseph Orphanage in Erie, Erie Co., PA.

James stayed in the orphanage till he was 18 years of age.

William was adopted by the Riley Family near Union City, Erie Co., PA.

Frank was adopted by Guy Runsel in Clarion Co., PA.

John was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Mullen who were from Union Co., PA.

Charles was adopted by Edward and Mary Bowers of Cameron Co., PA. They changed his name to Joseph Edward Bowers.
