Joseph E. Freed
Marine Joseph E. Freed (above) son of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Freed of 309 North Prospect St, was promoted to the rank of sergeant while serving aboard the heavy cruiser USS Albany, now operating with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Sgt Freed, a section leader of the First Machine Gun Platoon of the Albany's amphibious force, was awarded the rank by Capt. W.P. Hill Jr. Sgt Freed entered the Marines upon graduation from Connellsville Joint High School in May, 1955. He is expected to return to the U.S. some time in February.
