Oliver J. Shaffer

Oliver J. Shaffer

Oliver J. Shaffer, was born 1 Mar 1874, in Dry Ridge, (Mt. Tabor, PA). and died on 25 Aug 1929, at his home, near Mayport, PA., as a result of having been "kicked" in the stomach by cranking a tractor while treshing. He suffered for 3 days of his injuries prior to his death. He was well respected and admired and his funeral was so large all the folks could not fit in the Church. He is buried in the family plot at Mt. Tabor E. U. B. Cemetery, Dry Ridge, PA. He was the father of 14 children of which 8 predeceased him.

He was first married to Tabitha Irene Snyder born 8 Oct 1879, in Ringgold Twp., Jefferson Co., PA. She died along with a new born daughter, on 19 Feb. 1896, in Porter Twp., Jefferson County, PA. Cause of death was given as - Croup. She and the daughter were buried in the same casket in Timblin Cemetery, Jefferson Co., PA.

He then remarried on 11 Mar 1897, in Limestone, NY, where they'd eloped Rebecca Naomi Michael born 18 Nov 1877, near Ringgold, PA. She died 27 Apr 1956, from Cancer in the Adrian Hospital, Punxsutawney, Jefferson Co., PA. She was the daughter of Samuel Michael, Jr. and Mary Wise Michael. She was the mother of 13 children, of which 7 predeceased her all in infancy. She was an exceptionally "hard worker" and had told us that during her pregnancy she worked in the fields like a man, helped thresh grain, etc., and really hadn't cared for herself like she should have done. She was a "fantastic cook" and "baker" The submitter's fondest memories of her are as a little boy going to her house in North Freedom...... she always gave him sugar or molasses cookies, and best of all... a packet to take along home! The entire family is now deceased except for one son who is in a nursing home advanced in years.

The photo of Oliver J. Shaffer was taken of him while he was still single.
