Unknown Man Tintype

From the style of clothing, this is from about the 1860s, though I'm not very good on early men's clothing. I think tintypes started around 1855. However, you should check "Camera Clues" by Joe Nickell to be sure.

Some good books on early clothing are "American Victorian Costume in Early Photographs" by Priscilla Harris Dalrymple, "My Likeness Taken: Daguerreian Portraits in America" by Joan L. Severa, and "Dressed for the Photographer: Ordinary Americans and Fashion, 1840-1900" by Joan L. Severa.
