Unknown Man Tintype
This photo was found in the walls of the house built by John Morris (1774-1852) and Matilda Decker (1790-1836) at State Line Mills, McKean, PA in the 1830's when it was remodeled by Inga (Thwing) Buckley. This house is still standing. Its present address is RD 1, Box 190 Eldred, Pennsylvania 16731. Newspapers used as insulation were dated 1900-1907. Donated by John and Inga Buckley (nee Thwing).

From the style of clothing, this is from about the 1860s, though I'm not very good on early men's clothing. I think tintypes started around 1855. However, you should check "Camera Clues" by Joe Nickell to be sure.
Some good books on early clothing are "American Victorian Costume in Early Photographs" by Priscilla Harris Dalrymple, "My Likeness Taken: Daguerreian Portraits in America" by Joan L. Severa, and "Dressed for the Photographer: Ordinary Americans and Fashion, 1840-1900" by Joan L. Severa.
