The St. Catherine itself isn't in this photo. It was on a small cove around the point the Casino was built on. The vehicle is the hotel's jitney, used to transport guests between the hotel and the town of Avalon where the steamers from Los Angeles landed.
My dad worked for the Catalina Island Company in the 1930s, and drove one of the jitneys for a while, but that was probably more than a decade after this photo was taken. Judging from the dresses on the women, this photo probably dates from the late teens, early twenties. The St. Catherine was built in 1915.
