Joseph E. Averill was from Isle La Motte, Vermont.

He served as a Full Sergeant 1st Class during the Civil War. He enlisted 27 Sept 1861 and enlisted in Co. K, 6th Infantry Regiment, Vermont on 15 Oct 1861. He was wounded on 6 Jun 1863 at Fredericksburg, VA.

Sgt. Averill reenlisted in Co. K on 15 Dec 1863 and was again wounded. This time on 10 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. He died of wounds on 6 Jun 1864.
