Ardenia Arthur Wells, Emma C. Arthur and family
On the right is my Great Great grandmother, Ardenia (Arthur) Wells, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte Wells. On the left is Emma C. Arthur, sister of Ardenia. Both are children of John Arthur and Mary Mahone. The two children are are unknown. They are thought to be Mary Susan Wells and Anna Laura Wells. Picture was taken about 1880 probably in the town of Marmet in Kanawha County, WV. Ardenia and Napoleon are buried in Levens Cemetery at Rush Creek just a couple of miles from Marmet. Napoleon was shot and killed on July 3, 1900 in an argument over a pig.

Dating
The style of the clothing seems a little earlier than 1880, more like 1876-78, especially since the girls don't have dropped waists, which came into fashion around 1878. See "Victorian Costume for Ladies" by Linda Setnik, and you will see what I mean about the women's clothing being more typical of a slightly earlier date.
