Jaycees are seen after speaking on the radio station, WKBN. They were in downtown Youngstown near the movie theater (Warner Brothers' Theater?).

In 1938, the Youngstown Jaycees came up with the idea to collect dimes for a worthy cause. Its name was also its goal, "Mile of Dimes". By 1959, the Youngstown Jaycees collected $65,000 for the local T.B. Association.

Between the years of 1950-1952, the Jaycees constructed a wooden lung (an exact replica of an iron lung) and at the height of a severe Polio season gave it to the Youngstown Hospital. The Jaycees solicited funds in 1959 to purchase a T.B. X-Ray bus.

The Youngstown, OH Jaycees were soliciting funds for the local T.B. Association. Santa and the Jaycees appeared on the sidewalk next to the movie theater (Warner Brothers' Theater?) in downtown Youngstown. They also were broadcasting live on the radio station, WKBN. Santa is seen giving something to children (candy or possibly a rabbit foot?).

Next to Santa on the right side of the photo is H. Richard Conner, who was President of the Youngstown Jaycees from 1950-1951. Mr. Conner was a salesman for Republic Steel Corporation.

The man next to Santa on the left hand side of the photo may be Russell Fish.

The rest of the people are unknown. The lady inside the bus may be the wife of a Jaycee.

Youngstown Jaycees Teenage Driving Rodeo 1950s

Every year the Youngstown Jaycees held a "Teen-Age Driving Road-e-o" for high school students. The teens were given an obstacle driving course to drive. The winners completed on State and National levels. National winners were given a trip to Washington D.C. and a visit with the President.

The youth in the car is unknown. The officer that appears in the right of this photograph is also unknown.

This photograph appeared in a publication done by the Youngstown Junior Chamber of Commerce for the Jaycees 25th Anniversary in 1959. The Youngstown Jaycees were founded in 1934.

Youngstown Jaycees Santa Jumping Out of the Jaycees Bus

The Jaycee Santa is seen jumping out of the Jaycee bus as the Jaycees broadcast live on the radio WKBN. This happened during the Jaycees "Mile of Dimes". The Jaycees are soliciting funds for the local TB Association.

The Jaycees were seen in downtown Youngstown, OH near the movie theater (Warner Brothers' Theater?).

The man surprised by Santa may possibly be David V. Gregg, later First Vice President of the Youngstown Jaycees from 1958-1959. The man talking into the radio microphone is Walter Grey McKenrick Jr. (1917-2000)

The Jaycees had their own radio show called, "Mr. Jaycee Reports". This show broadcasted every Saturday at 7:00 pm on WKBN.

The Youngstown, OH Jaycees of the 1950s did many various activities in the community. Some of their projects:

Edward J. Hulme was the President of the Youngstown Jaycees from 1954-1955. He worked as an "Executive Assistant" for the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce.

Irving Loewit was the President of the Youngstown Jaycees from 1958-1959. He was an self-employed optometrist in Girard, OH.

Walter Grey McKenrick Jr. (1917-2000) was a member of the Jaycees, Western Star Lodge No. 21 (Youngstown, OH), and Aut-Mori Grotto. He was a salesman for Strausbaugh Motor Company in Youngstown, OH. He was later employed by Moore-Peterson Insurance Agency.

The first man to the right of this photo may be the announcer for the radio station WKBN. WKBN was CBS' radio station in Youngstown, OH in the 1950s.

Chris Brooks, Model Airplane Winner 1959

Chris Brooks holding his model airplane and trophy, 1959. Chris was the son of the Jaycees' Model Airplane Contest Chairman, Cliff Brooks.

The contest was for youths between the ages of 12-16. Isaly's of Youngstown donated two sets of trophies for the contest. Local donors for the contest were: Boardman Cycle and Hobby Sales, Amer's Hobby Shop, Mart Jewelry Inc., Model Aircraft Engineers, Youngstown Airways Inc., and District 26 of the Steelworkers of America.

This photograph appeared on the cover of the Youngstown Jaycee, March 1959, Volume 2, Number 5. The publication was published by the Youngstown Junior Chamber of Commerce.

This photograph appeared in the publication done by the Youngstown, OH Junior Chamber of Commerce for the Jaycees 25th Anniversary in 1959. Caption under the photo: "Proud fishermen at Sports Show trout tank."

The Youngstown Jaycees held a "Sports Show" every year during the last week of February held at Idora Park in Youngstown, OH. A display of boats and sports equipment were exhibited at the show. The Trout Fishing in tanks was always a big attraction at the shows.

The people in this photograph are all unknown. They are probably from the Youngstown area.

The Youngstown Jaycees broadcasting live on the radio station WKBN during their "Mile of Dimes" project. They are seen in downtown Youngstown, OH near the movie theater (Warner Brothers' Theater?). The Jaycees solicited funds for the local TB Association.

The Home Savings and Loan Company Building is seen in the background (building with a point at the top of the building).

Youngstown Jaycee Irving Loewit is getting ready to speak on the radio. He is the shorter man seen between two tall Jaycee members.

The man to the right of Irving may be Russell Fish. The man to the left of Irving is unknown. The man with the hat that has his back to the camera is Walter Grey McKenrick Jr. (1917-2000).

Children on the Youngstown Jaycees Christmas Shopping Tour 1957

The photograph was taken during the 1957 Shopping Tour for underprivileged children. It was the Youngstown Jaycees third annual shopping tour that was held on Saturday, Dec 14, 1957 from 9:30 am until 1:30 pm. Over 95 underprivileged children took part in the tour. Each child received $5.00 to purchase gifts for their parents or relatives. The children were taken after the tour to the Wick Park Pavilion, where the Jayceettes (womens' group) wrapped presents for the children. Refreshments were served and everyone sang Christmas Carols (led by the leader of the Boardman Campfire Girls, Mrs. Gordon Miller).
