Monument to Captain Peter Grove

Monument dedicated to the heroic services given by Captain Peter Grove, ranger, during the Revolutionary War.

While this Monument is dedicated to Captain Grove, it can also be considered a dedication to his Widow and children. Captain Grove died by drowning in the Susquehanna River in 1802. Soon after this tragedy, his Widow, Sara Whitmore/Witmer Grove moved to Venango Co, Pa. to live with her children. She resided in Venango Co. for the remainder of her life. In later years, she received a pension from the Government for Captain Grove’s military services. She is buried in an unmarked grave in the old Presbyterian Cemetery in Sunville, Venango Co., Pa.

Captain Grove & Sara Witmore Grove were the grandparents of Sara Jane Hazlet who married James Madison Bowman.
