James was married first to Lucinda Barber on April 11, 1852 in Summit County, Ohio (near Akron) and he and Lucinda were hoteliers (The Empire House Hotel) in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. </p> <p>They moved on to Sparta, Wisconsin after the hotel burned in 1870 and from there, they went to Marshall, Lyon County, Minnesota in 1877.
